The herb hawthorn is a traditional heart tonic used for treating a number of heart conditions and problems. It has a well-established and well-deserved reputation. Hawthorn gently strengthens the heart muscle, improving blood circulation through the heart and reducing the heart's need for oxygen. It also helps the heart circulate blood with less effort.
In Europe, hawthorn berry preparations are widely used to treat mild angina. Extensive research has demonstrated that hawthorn extracts improve heart function by opening up the coronary arteries. This in turn improves the blood and oxygen supply to the heart. Hawthorn also decreases blood cholesterol levels, another heart-healthy benefit, and it is safe to use for extended periods of time, according to European clinical experience. It is thought that hawthorn's heart benefits are due to special compounds in the plant - oligomeric procyanidins and flavonoids which open (dilate) the smooth vessels of the coronary arteries.
Hawthorn is approved for a number of other heart problems including cardiac arrhythmia, heart disease, heart failure and heart attack. Due to its ability to widen (dilate) blood vessels, it is also used to treat high blood pressure and intermittent claudication.
