Motherwort
has a long history of medicinal use. With a name like cardiaca,
this herb might be expected to help heart problems, and science
confirms that is does. Chinese studies show that it helps to slow
a rapid heartbeat, generally improving cardiac activity. It also
helps tranquillize the nervous system, reducing the anxiety, nervous
tension and stress that may accompany or trigger heart problems.
The name also gives a clue as to the
other use of the herb. Motherwort is also well known for its use
in conditions affecting women and has been used for centuries for
treating conditions relating to childbirth. It is useful for treating
amenorrhoea as it an emmenagogue and contains chemicals that affect
the uterus in several ways, including the promotion of menstrual
blood flow. It may also be used to start delayed periods and, if
taken on a continual basis, may help regulate abnormal menstrual
cycles and to treat menopausal and menstrual complaints.
It also has been used as a uterine
tonic before and after childbirth. The herb contains a chemical
called leonurine, which encourages uterine contractions.
Motherwort may also have relaxing
effects on the nervous system, making it potentially useful for
relieving both the physical symptoms (such as bloating and cramps)
and the emotional symptoms (such as irritability) of premenstrual
syndrome and menopause.
Motherwort is also helpful for anxiety,
irritability and stress and may be particularly effective when heart
rhythm speeds up due to nervousness.
Motherwort may also be used to ease
stomach gas and help with insomnia. |
