Vervain
has a number of useful properties: anthelmintic, antispasmodic,
aphrodisiac, astringent, diaphoretic, diuretic, emetic, emmenagogue,
febrifuge, galactagogue, nervine, sedative, sudorific and tonic
and is used for a number of conditions.
Vervain strengthens the nervous system
and may be used for brain and nervous conditions such as depression,
fits and convulsions, insomnia, nervous tension, mental stress,
migraine and headache caused by nerves, nervous disorders, physical
and emotional/mental problems that affect the nervous system and
as a restorative remedy for nervous and exhaustion and debility.
Vervain is also used for various female
conditions and has a stimulant action on the uterus. It helps increase
the flow of breast milk and helps with painful or irregular menstruation,
post-natal depression, premenstrual tension, promotes the onset
of menstruation and can help with labour contractions.
Vervain is also used for gastrointestinal
conditions and various illnesses linked to the stomach, liver and
kidneys. It benefits the digestive system, improves the absorption
of food, eases pain in the bowels, stimulates digestion and is a
remedy for stomach disorders and acute diarrhoea. It also helps
with genitourinary conditions such as bladder stones and kidney
trouble. Vervain also stimulates liver function and can be used
to treat conditions such as biliary tract complaints, gallstones,
jaundice and liver diseases.
Vervain also has a number of other
uses. It stimulates metabolism, can treat parasitic conditions such
as worms in children, helps with respiratory conditions like asthma
and coughs, throat conditions and whooping cough. It is also used
for pleurisy, autumn fever, pain especially rheumatic pains, exhaustion
and fatigue, early stages of fevers (especially for the onset of
flu), intermittent fevers, ophthalmia, muscle tension and ulcers.
In the early stages of colds it can be combined with Yarrow to promote
sweating and it helps to reduce inflammation.
Generally, Vervain is an ideal tonic
for convalescence. By aiding the digestion and restoring the nervous
system it can help people recovering from chronic illness. Vervain
is thought to have a mild antidepressant action, and is used specifically
to treat anxiety and the nervous exhaustion that follow long-term
stress.
